#6StPopup

Spring 2017

Why 6th Street?

Learn about the project.

In 2014, Gallaudet University and Sustainable DC collaborated to create a popup use space on 6th St NE using Tactical Urbanism, a set of fast and temporary methods to create change in a place.

Before 2014, 6th Street was almost impossible to cross. Crossing from Gallaudet to Union Market meant moving across 4 lanes of fast-moving traffic. This quick and easy project changed all of that, narrowing the street to two lanes by using only white paint, planters, and bollards. Bike lanes and a bikeshare station were also added in the space.

On Friday, April 21, 2017, we used the 6th St Popup Space to hold a conversation about popups.

We need this space; let's make it great!

A Vibrant Conversation

How passers-by brought new life to an empty space.

Visitors were encouraged to think about how the 6th Street Popup Space could be used to better the Union Market-Gallaudet University community.

Community members were excited at the possibility of transforming the space with creative uses. Ideas spanned multiple categories and largely focused on enhanced leisure activities in the area.

Here is a sample of the uses that participants dreamed up.
